School Life - Chess Champions

Cobram Anglican Grammar School’s students recently took on the challenges of the chess board as they participated against other schools from the region in the 2018 Moira Schools Chess Championships, held in Yarrawonga. Twenty-one Cobram AGS students competed alongside over 150 other students from schools in Wodonga, Wangaratta, Rutherglen and Yarrawonga. Our students competed strongly and were fine ambassadors for our community, displaying exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the seven rounds of competition.

In the Secondary level competition, Cobram AGS students were a picture of concentration and camaraderie, sharing moments of friendly chat between themselves and their opponents as they planned their moves. Our Senior team of Bailey White, Martin Kong, Cadence Pang and Shem Swoffer did extremely well against tough competition, taking out second place in the Secondary section. Martin Kong was a calm and determined competitor and achieved second place in the Individual section. Rory Brooker was highly focused all day and won the Most Improved medal.

In the Primary section, Jordan Su won second place in the Individual competition. The Cobram AGS team of Angus Donald, Cedric Pang, Archie Paterson and Jordan Su also achieved third place.

The competition also provided the opportunity for first-time competitors Hannah Logie, Sylar Alcorn, Lewis Brown, Alex Hawke, Scout Kernaghan, Lachlan Pardy, Abbey Searle and Bosco Su to experience the challenges of the game. After some nervous beginnings, all competed enthusiastically and gained great results.

Both the Primary and Secondary teams have now qualified for the State Championships, which is a fine achievement.
